Salt mining has a long tradition in Berchtesgaden. The wealth of the whole region (just think of Salzburg literally translated "Salt fortress" has it's origin in the white gold - for centuries salt was one of the few ways to preserve your food and without salt nobody can survive. An old 19th century Mine is now open to the public.
