An option for your tour in Bavaria and Southern Germany

Augsburg

Augsburg developed over two millennia and was shaped by completely different architecture styles. Especially the Renaissance flourished here-and Rococo (a late Baroque style) became known as "the Augsburg style". Great buildings, build between the time of the Romans (who founded Augsburg) and today can be found all over the place. Maybe the best known building complex is the Fuggerei, built by Jacob Fugger the Rich, banker to kings and emperors, is the world's oldest social housing program for the poor. Even today its residents pay an annual rent of less than a dollar, but their rental contracts still ask them to pray everyday for the Fugger family. Of Augsburg's numerous glorious religious edifices, the Dom (Cathedral) with five windows of the oldest figured stained glass in Germany, St. Ulrich-Münster and Protestant Ulrichskirche constitute a splendid architectural ensemble.

A place, worth to be visited on your Romantic Road tour.
